Styx, Foreigner, Don Felder – Verona NY – “Soundtrack of Summer” Tour

The Soundtrack of Summer Tour featuring Styx, Foreigner and former Eagles’ guitarist Don Felder shook the floor at The Event Center at the Turning Stone Casino. This tour is Classic Rock at its finest!!

Kicking off the night was Don Felder taking us back in time with some true classic Eagles songs like “Witchy Woman,” “One of These Nights” “Heartache Tonight” and of course “Life In The Fast Lane.” It was just hit after hit. Aside of the Eagles tunes, Don Felder played some original songs as well including “Heavy Metal” from the 1980’s animated film, “Heavy Metal” and his #1 hit “You Don’t Have Me” off his current album, “Road to Forever.”

Don Fedler was spot on with his all-star line-up band, featuring Greg Suran (Goo Goo Dolls, Local H) on guitar, Shem Von Schroeck (Kenny Loggings, Tom Jones, Sheena Easton, Amy Grant) on bass, Timothy Drury (Whitesnake, Don Henley, Melissa Etheridge and Stevie Nicks) on keyboards and Steve DiStanislao (Crosby/Nash, Kenny Loggins, Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour solo) on drums. They played a full nine song set before closing their performance with a special rendition of “Hotel California,” where Don Felder invited Tommy Shaw and Todd Sucherman of Styx to join them on the stage. What a way to kick off the night with these superb classic songs! (Check out our photo gallery of Don Felder’s set – links below)

Up next was co-headliner Foreigner with their “Double Vision,” playing “Head Games” as they took this party to the next level! Yes, playing those hit songs first, the crowd was pumped up and ready to rock! Equipped with a spectacular light show, paired with several powerful fog machines that would shoot the fog high into the air, Foreigner was visually entertaining as a rock show should be! Musically, these guys sounded GREAT! They really engaged in the crowd, including when lead vocalist, Kelly Hansen went out into the crowd, circling around the arena before back on stage during “Cold As Ice.” Mid set, Hansen then turned the attention to middle of the arena to a man who would purpose to his girl; Foreigner would dedicated “Waiting For A Girl Like You” to the newly engaged couple. Before song five, Foreigner would be joined on stage by their founding member, Mick Jones (with his guitar) and they would play “Feels Like the First Time.” Jones would play the remainder of their set which would include “Urgent,” “Starrider,” “Juke Box Hero” and a special edition of “ I Want To Know What Love Is” where the local Chittenango High School Choir would accompany them on stage. They closed out the night with the timeless rock anthem, “Hot Blooded!” They have a straight – one, two punch rock n roll that just brought you back in time! It truly was a great performance! (Check out our photo gallery of Foreigner’s set – links below)

And just when you think this night of Classic Rock couldn’t get much better, Styx would take us in to rock-n-roll perfection overdrive. They made their grand entrance with the epic “Grand Illusion.” They continued on with “Too Much Time On My Hands” and “Fooling Yourself.”  Tommy Shaw, James Young and Ricky Phillip would do their classic triple guitar walk from the drum kit to the front stage. Lawrence Gowan was on his swivel keyboard interacting with the crowd and the other band members.  They guys just truly have a great time on stage and just love to engage their crowd. And one thing is for sure, there was no stopping and their fans couldn’t get enough. They only slowed it down a bit for their hit song “Lady” and “Crystal Ball” where people lit up the arena – some old school with lighters and while others used the cell phone lights. Styx added in “Superstar” to the set list which was fun to hear live.  Tommy Shaw would make a round in the crowd, circling around the arena playing the outro to the song! And if that wasn’t enough, Styx inviting Don Felder back out on stage, to joined them in “Blue Collar Man.” They closed out the amazing night with “Come Sail Away.” They would return for an encore, making the arena explode with confetti while playing “Rockin’ The Paradise” and the incredible poetic “Renegade.” What a way to end this perfect night of Classic Rock!!!
