#TBT – 2001 – maudlin of the Well

This week’s MPJ’s Throwback Thursday is maudlin of the Well.

I first came by this band when I met Shawn Ortis of Dark Symphonies Records. This was one of the band on the label that really stood out to me. They were very young, talented musicians doing anĀ  avant-garde metal. Their music takes you on a journey, that incorparates many different genres of music all within one song; for an example you may start out with soft soothing sounds that leads into aggression and then leaves you with a haunting sensation. If your unfamiliar with the band, take a listen below and you will hear what I mean.

The photo gallery below is from the Milwaukee Metal Fest (2001). This was my first time seeing maudlin live and it brings back many memories, as I floated between shooting for Musician Photo Journal and hanging out and helping at the Dark Symphonies booth.

While maudlin of the Well disbanded in 2003, fans remain true and strong and in 2008, fans donated enough money for the band to get back together and record a new album. That album was titled “Part the Second.” , Maudlin would release the album in 2010 free to download and enjoy.

Most recently – the band got back together to perform 2 shows back to back at the Stone in NYC. It was part of a week long residency of Toby Driver (maudlin of the Well’s frontman). See more about the show here.
