Ghost Stories with OTEP (Halloween Special)

It’s story time with Otep Shamaya, vocalist of OTEP. Sit back and listen as Otep shares a few of her own ghostly encounters…

Unfortunately, Fatty thought we heard enough. The audio died at the point where Otep went on to explain how they caught an orb on camera.

Fatty Arbuckle was a silent film star from 1913 – 1921 and had appeared in several movies with Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. His career came to a screeching hault when Fatty Arbuckle was charged with the death of the aspiring actress, Virginia Rappe.

Two days later, Rappe was hospitalized and died from peritonitis, caused by a ruptured bladder. Virginia Rappe had suffered from chronic cystitis which would flare up when she drank. She also had undergone several abortions within a few years and was preparing for yet another abortion as a result of a pregnancy by her boyfriend, director Henry Lehrman. Rumor had it that she already had the procedure done. According to Andy Edmonds’s theory, Arbuckle may have accidentally struck Rappe’s midsection with his knee, as a result of innocent horseplay at the party. In pain, Rappe was saying “Arbuckle did it,” or “He hurt me,” which her friend at the party took that as Arbuckle had raped or violently attacked her. After Rappe’s death, her friend pressed charges against Arbuckle. Later, come to find out Rappe’s friend was just trying to get money out of Arbuckle.

While Arbuckle was acquitted the movie industry outcast him and banned his movies because of the scandal. His wife ended their marriage and it wasn’t until 11yrs after the death of Virginia Rappe did Arbuckle make his way back into Hollywood. He filmed a few short films with Vitaphone (out of Brooklyn) which was released in the United States. They tried to release it in Britain but he was still banned because of what happened with Rappe.

In 1933, Arbuckle was signed to Warner Brothers to make a feature-length film. It was reported that he said it was the best day of his life. Later that night, he suffered a heart attack and died in his sleep at age 46. I guess you could see why Arbuckle’s soul may still be around–wanting the best day of his life to never end!

Catch Otep Shamaya at one of her upcoming shows–maybe she’ll even finish her story without Fatty Arbuckle’s putting a stop to it. OTEP will be on tour with Cavalera Conspiracy (with Max Cavalera) this fall. Tour dates are listed below.
