Gruesome Two Tour – Alice Cooper/Rob Zombie – Buffalo NY

It was a stellar night in Shock-Rock history when The Gruesome Twosome tour featuring Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper played their final show to a sold-out crowd in Lewiston, New York.

Alice Cooper was first to take the stage opening with the classic anthem, “School’s Out For Summer” followed by “No More Mr. Nice Guy.” His show was packed with Alice magic and horror show antics. Within the first 4 songs, Alice had “speared” a ninja, was captured and placed in a straight jacket, and executed by a guillotine. But the “horror” didn’t stop there, he was injected by a mammoth hypodermic needle, knifed and hung in the gallows. Of course, when Alice was not being killed, he was the killer: murdering nurses and decapitating babies all while never missing a note and fitting in several costume changes.

Alice is still on the top of his game, entertaining crowds and putting on one killer performance. He hit every note on key and his band was tight. It was everything you’d come to expect from an Alice Cooper show and more! Alice commands the crowd from the get go and engages them into the horror show. There were giant balloons dropped into the crowd and when they would bounce to the stage, Alice would spear them with his sword which caused the balloons to explode with confetti. During “Billion Dollar Baby,” toy money filled the air over the crowd, providing souvenirs to those who caught it. Mardi Gras beads also went out during “Dirty Diamonds” and Alice even threw his cane to a lucky girl in the front row. You really never know what he was going to do next and the crowd devoured it. He closing out the set with “Elected,” dressed as a silver Uncle Sam waiving an American Flag. He left the crowd in a roar as they jumped into one last song “Under My Wheels.”

Remember “Halloween Returns….Forever!” Alice Cooper released his new single, “Keepin’ Halloween Alive” which can be heard/purchased on his website. Alice began working on his next album with producer Bob Ezrin. Bob produced “Billion Dollar Babies,” “Welcome To My Nightmare,” “School’s Out” and the “Love It To Death” albums. Be sure to check in on Alice’s websites for more information.

A black curtain went up and the stage was transformed into the second featured horror show which consists of multiple skulls, skeletons and bones with monsters and alien robots. The show went from Act 1:  An Old School Horror Show to Act 2: Bones and Skulls, A Modern Day Horror in HD Technicolor.

Rob Zombie’s stage was set, the lights went off and the “Call of the Zombie” drew in the crowd with great anticipation. The curtain finally dropped, and “What Lurks on Channel X?” began. The stage was full of skeletons, skulls, giant bones that outline multimedia video screens. There was a giant video screen used as the backdrop; it projected a countdown and the band finally took the stage dressed in Zombie masks, cloaked in hoods, while the lead Zombie (Rob) came out in a cowboy hat and claw hand. It definitely was a powerful entrance that provided an excellent crowd-mind transformation in Rob Zombieland!

After the first song, they ripped the zombie mask off and went straight into “Superbeast” followed by “Scum Of The Earth.” The large production of an old Rob Zombie shows is back in full force!! Returning to the Zombie stage was the large creapy smiling alien monster that dances during “More Human Than Human” and the cloaked, barrel drumming monsters join the band on stage during “Dragula.” Added into the mix was a new behemoth robot, a martian death machine that is part of “Mars Needs Women.” No matter where your seat was you were thoroughly entertained.

As if the stage production wasn’t enough to get the crowd engaged, Rob went the extra mile. He brought the people from the nose bleed section into the isles, all the way down

to the stage area. Later on, guitarist John 5 performed an amazing solo while Rob took a large spotlight and went out into the crowd. He walked up the isle into the nose bleed seats, stopping periodically to shine the spotlight toward the stage and back towards the crowd. He circled around the entire amphitheatre before returning to the stage. The whole while, you were flipping back and forth, to watch where Rob was going, but also watching what John was playing on the stage.

The band also threw a variety of beach balls and giant balloons into the crowd during “Sick Bubblegum” which was wild to watch. The large

balloons bounced high in the air, almost floating in slow motion. The beach balls moved quicker and didn’t go as high into the air. Below the balls you could see the crowd jumping at an even faster rate. It was totally chaotic and fun to watch it all moved together. Towards the very end of the set, they shot out white feathers into the crowd. It look like it was a blizzard in the arena, the whole crowd in front was covered in white.

For an encore, the video screens showed a movie preview for Rob Zombie’s “Werewolf Women of the SS” (featuring Sheri Moon and Nicholas Cage). When the clip ended, the band came back out on the stage in red long coats, in the style of Nazi Security Officers. When the song was over, the lights went down and Old Munster clips began to play on the large screen. The band did one final costume change, and closed out the night with Dragula.

Halloween came early in Lewiston!!! It was an amazing show and an excellent choice for these two bands to team up in a co-headlining tour. It’s a shame that the tour had to come to an end. Let’s hope that in the fall they will return to the stage together.

Alice Cooper will head to Europe in June and back to North America in July for a headlining tour. In Aug and Nov, Alice will return to Europe (see dates below).

Rob Zombie will be hitting the road this summer where they will be co-headlining the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem tour with Korn. Also on the bill is Lamb of God, Five Finger Death Punch, In This Moment, Hatebreed, Chimaira,  Shadows Fall, Atreyu and more. (See dates listed below)

Be sure to check out the video interview we did with John 5 before the show.
